What is a Family Constellation?

Family Constellations is a method used to untangle yourself from the behaviours, emotions and damaging repetitive patterns that create conflicts and are potentially limiting or hindering your ability to move forward in your life. These are patterns, behaviours and emotions that you have unconsciously taken from your ancestors and family system out of love and loyalty.

Many events in your family line or throughout your family history impact how you think, feel, and behave in the present moment. One individual’s grief, fear, exclusion or anger might influence the entire family because the family system is connected energetically and though cellular memory, for up to 7 generations.

Family Constellations can be experienced in groups or individually.

What happens during a Family Constellation?

In group constellations, the facilitator will select a person from the group who wishes to work on something they would like to change or shift in their life.

After briefly discussing the issue with the facilitator the client (or sometimes the facilitator) will choose members of the group, unrelated and not personally connected to the ‘client’, to represent those involved in order to uncover the hidden dynamics behind the issue.

Representatives connect to what is known as the ‘knowing field’. In doing so they are able to experience sensations in their bodies, emotions and intuitive movements about members of the family system. When doing this it will bring light to the unseen or unknown. Once brought to light, together we are able to begin to restore the orders of love in the family system.

In group Family Constellations, everyone present receives insights and shifts, even those who choose to observe mindfully.

Why Family Constellations?

At times, families or members of family systems may exclude certain members of the family, by choice or through circumstance. For example; a child who died young or was aborted, lifestyle choices, perpetrators, adoptions, traumas, victims of a crime or suicide and others. Those exclusions affect the entire family, even after the family no longer has contact with them.

When ready, family constellations create an inner movement that shifts our perspective about a particular situation or circumstance that has been weighing heavy on our hearts or that we have been carrying around with us, unknowingly. When we shift our soul shifts and settles into a deeper state of comfort. Sometimes this happens right away and sometimes it settles over time.

The History of Family Constellation

Bert Hellinger, a German psychologist, is the founder of Family Constellations. He began his research on the representative phenomenon in 1978 and discovered the basic orders of life, which he called "Orders of Love". These form the basis of Family Constellation.

In the 1950’s Hellinger traveled to South Africa as a missionary. He became interested in the customs of the Zulu people and a particular ceremony they used to understand one another. In Zulu tradition, ancestors are sacred, and healing ancestral wounds is a key to strong family ties. He saw family members speak to one another candidly, without being passive-aggressive or becoming frustrated.

This was not the family constellations method in its final form but the birth of the idea. Hellinger returned to Germany and spent the rest of his life examining the ways our family narratives influence our personal identities. Family constellations advocates tend to be devout: It’s not just “therapy”; it’s a life philosophy. It’s seeing people with a different perception—and accepting what you see (for example: learning to see your mother as a human being).
